rocks and minerals
About Course
Overview
Rocks and minerals form the solid foundation of our planet, but they are not the same thing. The easiest way to remember the difference is: Minerals are the ingredients, and rocks are the final cake.
1. What is a Mineral?
A mineral is a naturally occurring, solid substance with a strict chemical formula and a regular, repeating crystal structure. It is uniform, meaning it is exactly the same all the way through.
- Key Feature: Pure, single substance.
- Examples: Quartz, Diamond, Gold, and Salt.
2. What is a Rock?
A rock is a solid piece of Earth’s crust made up of a mixture of two or more different minerals locked together. Because it is a mixture, a rock does not have a single chemical formula.
- Key Feature: A combination of different mineral ingredients.
- Examples: Granite (made of quartz, feldspar, and mica), Limestone, and Marble.
🧠 Quick Check for Students
- Mineral = The individual building block (e.g., Quartz).
- Rock = The final structure built from those blocks (e.g., Granite).
